Please read ALL of this ReadMe prior to using this month's virus definitions and virus help file.
Thank you for downloading the latest SAM Virus Definitions and SAM Virus Help file and for taking the time to read this important information. This ReadMe file contains the most up-to-date information about using this month's virus definitions for Symantec AntiVirus for Macintosh (SAM). For ease of use we recommend printing a copy of this file.

HOW TO INSTALL
• To install this month's definitions, drag and drop the Downloaded SAM Virus Help and SAM Virus Definitions files to the System Folder. Replace the older SAM Virus Help and SAM Virus Definitions already in the System folder. Restart your Macintosh to enable SAM Intercept to use the new Definitions.
COMPATIBILITY
• The SAM Virus Definitions and SAM Virus Help file are only compatible with versions of SAM 4.5 and higher. This includes SAM 4.5.0 and SAM 4.5.1. For the French, German and Swedish version of SAM you need version 4.5.x. For users of SAM 4.0.x, we can no longer guarantee that your version will be compatible with the latest virus definitions, since version 4.0 was developed before Word/Excel macro viruses were in existence. We highly recommend that any versions of SAM earlier than version 4.5.0 be upgraded to SAM 4.5.1. The upgrade to version 4.5.1 is available from our Customer Service department (800-441-7234) and authorized Symantec Software Resellers.

PATCHERS FOR SAM 4.x
• SAM provides patchers on-line via Symantec's FTP site, AOL (keyword Symantec) and CompuServe (Go SymMac) that will update earlier versions of SAM to the latest version.
SAM 4.5.0 to SAM 4.5.1 (English and International English):
• Due to the increased size of the virus definitions file, users may experience various memory related issues during boot-up or when accessing the SAM application. To solve these issues, we recommend several solutions.
I. Segment Loader Error on Startup:
- Version: If you are using SAM 4.0.x or older, please upgrade to version 4.5.1. If you are using SAM 4.5.0, use the patch mentioned above to update to 4.5.1.
- SAM Intercept Updater: If problems persist, users should download the SAM Intercept Updater via Symantec's FTP site as listed above, AOL or CompuServe. The SAM Intercept Updater increases the memory allocation directly to SAM Intercept. Users are highly recommended to update to version 4.5.1 and then use the SAM Intercept Updater to permanently fix the Segment Loader issue. The SAM Intercept Updater can be used with the localized versions (French, German and Swedish) of SAM as well.
-All patches should be run with extensions off.
II. Miscellaneous SAM memory errors:
• SAM will occasionally crash or deliver an error message (usually type 25 or type 1) when you do one of the following: attempt to launch the SAM application, start a manual scan, or click on the SAM preferences button. Any error or crash while scanning the drive also usually indicates a memory error.
• Issues like these are attributed to the default memory allocation for the SAM application being too small. To resolve the issue, we recommend increasing the memory allocation to the SAM application.
To do this, follow the following steps:
1) Find the 'SAM' application, which is located in the SAM Folder by default.
2) Select it by clicking once on the icon (do not launch the program).
3) Choose "Get Info" from the File menu.
4) When the "Get Info Box" opens, in the lower right-hand corner of the window there are three boxes referring to memory requirements.
5) In the 'Preferred size' setting, increase the memory allocation. (We recommend increasing the memory allocation to 3000-5000k.) This field is the Maximum amount of memory the application will use to do its job.
6) In the 'Minimum size' setting, change the memory allocation to the same number in the 'Preferred size' field. This field is the lowest memory the application can use to do its job.
7) Close the 'SAM Info' window.
8) Open the SAM application and verify that the issue has been resolved.
Should problems persist or other issues present themselves, please contact technical support.
